Landscapes changing into paintings
De kleine paneeltjes willen zich niet meten met de uitgestrektheid van de Schotse Hooglanden; ze willen wel een getrouw portret van de natuur zijn, maar even goed kan de herinnering aan schilderijen uit de kunstgeschiedenis meespelen in de keuze van het landschap.
De afbeelding van natuur wordt doorkruist door de structuur in het hout waarop het schilderij is geconstrueerd. Dat herinnert aan de materiële natuur van het schilderij als een houten object.
The small panels are not intended to compete with the vastness of the Scottish Highlands. Rather, they are a faithful portrait of nature. But it might as well be that memories from art history lead to the choice of a landscape.
The representation of nature is intersected by the structure of the wood on which the painting is made. That reminds us of the material nature of the painting as a wooden object.
